Divatress Haircare & Beauty

Personally I’m not a wig-wearing girl, but I have quite a few friends who enjoy wearing them, and after watching Wendy Williams for over 5 years each morning, I love how she uses wigs to change up her style.  Divatress has a variety of human hair lace front diva wigs, all reasonably priced…they even have a $20 and under section.
However, when introduced to Divatress I ventured over to two sections of their site that probably don’t get as much attention. First, their haircare section is perfect for girls like me who have thick, coarse, hair with waves or curls. I’m always looking for strong hydrating conditioners and oils to keep my hair healthy, so I was happy to see they sell both Shea Moisture and OGX Organix products, in addition to some other brands I was familiar with. I really want to try the Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curling Gel Soufflé and the OGX Organix Moroccan Argan Oil Shampoo & Conditioner.  Curling gels help to keep my hair tamed and neat looking, and my hair craves Moroccan oil, it keeps my ends perfectly hydrated.
The Divatress Beauty section has a lot of great options for hair, from affordable curling irons and blow dryers, to a variety of nail, makeup, and skincare products.  I saw some old favorite products, like Demert Nail Enamel Dryer, and some new products I’d like to try like the Absolute New York Detox Clarifying Facial Sheet Mask.
One of the best parts about Divatress is that you get free shipping with orders over $49. With the wide selection of products they have, I think it’d be relatively easy to spend that amount!  If you’re looking for a small business to shop with, check out Divatress & their selection of beauty products!

Budget Beauty: Hask Charcoal Clarifying Shampoo + Conditioner

I like to switch up my haircare routine often, I’m always bouncing back between different shampoos and conditioners, sometimes I focus on volume, other times I need a super hydrating product.  With my color treated hair it really just depends on how it feels at the moment.
When I was given the opportunity to try out Hask’s Charcoal Clarifying Shampoo + Conditioner I was so intrigued by the charcoal aspect of these products.  Charcoal, lemon, and grapefruit oils work to give your scalp & hair a serious cleansing…hence, clarifying.  Clarifying shampoos are all the rage right now, their purpose is to eliminate any impurity, from the environment to your hair mousse, from your hair & scalp.  It seems like any regular ol’ shampoo would do this, but that’s not the case, these shampoos pack a bit more of a punch when cleansing your hair, all while keeping the essential oils within the hair to keep it strong.

Most clarifying shampoos are meant for weekly use, but luckily with the Hask Charcoal Clarifying Shampoo you can use it multiple times a week.  So far using this shampoo has been a great experience, it gives a nice lather, doesn’t dry out my strands, and locks in shine.  I always worry about shampoo lightening/ weakening my purple highlights underneath my hair, but that hasn’t happened using the Hask Charcoal system, so that is a major plus for me.
The Hask Charcoal Clarifying Conditioner works just as well, leaving my hair soft and feeling hydrated.  It has the same citrus oils as in the shampoo, so it’s a double dose of charcoaly-citrusy greatness.  For the price point, you really can’t go wrong with either of these Hask Charcoal products.

D.C. Happenings: Cherry Blow Dry Bar

In an age where women receive a blow out as often as a manicure it’s important to have a local blow dry salon you can trust and build a relationship with.  Cherry Blow Dry Bar is located right in Clarendon & the vibe when you walk in is, in my opinion, New York chic.  From the super cute chandeliers to the warehouse type flooring, the experience is perfect for the fun professional women in our area.

I had been driving past Cherry Blow Dry Bar for a while and I decided it be would be perfect place to have my, and my bestie, Heather’s, hair done for the Washington Humane Society’s Fashion for Paws event.  I love love love the Washington Humane Society, and I’ve been to their annual Fashion for Paws event many times, so, of course, I needed a great place to have my hair done before.  I was excited to try Cherry Blow Dry Bar for the first time, and they certainly did not disappoint!

As soon as you enter you’re warmly welcomed and promptly asked if you’d like a glass of champagne.  How could you not love that?!  Also, they were playing the best music, a little bit of everything which I love.

Lindsey, my stylist, has been doing hair for about 7 years, but has only been working at Cherry since the beginning of this year.  She was kind enough to answer some of my questions about Cherry Blow Dry Bar!

We all know there are other blow dry bars popping up, especially in the DMV area, when I asked Lindsey what set Cherry apart from their competitors she mentioned how valuable the customer service experience is, which I totally agree with.  She also focused on the consistency between all of the Cherry locations and explained how the stylists training for Cherry is unique.  There’s also another Cherry in the area, in Mosaic District, so it’s nice to know that everything across all of the Cherry Blow Dry Bars are done in the exact same way.

Also, Cherry Blow Dry Bar membership options are available for frequent customers, and they are super affordable.  A month-to-month membership is $60 and that includes 2 monthly blowouts, 10% off products, and discounts on other salon services.  The Frequent-Dryer unlimited monthly memberships runs $149, which, aren’t really that bad of a price if you have a lot of D.C. events to attend!

I loved my hair for the event, the curls were great, and the style lasted all night, and well into the next day!  I also have to comment on the fact that Lindsey was able to wash, dry, and style my hair in such a reasonable time frame- I have thick & long hair, and my other blow dry experiences have taken quite a long time.  My experience at Cherry was just enough where I was able to relax and enjoy myself, but not too long where I felt a time constraint with getting ready for the event.

Next time you’re looking for a high quality and affordable blow out, pay a visit to Cherry Blow Dry Bar, rest assured you will be treated well & love your blow out!

Keranique Scalp Stimulating Shampoo & Volumizing Conditioner

As someone who gets her hair colored frequently, I’m always looking for a new shampoo & conditioner that will treat my hair graciously.  My hair is so interesting because it is incredibly thick, yet also so fine that the same time.  I never really worry about shampoos, as long as my hair feels clean and all product buildup, etc., is removed, I’m happy.  On occasion conditioners will weigh it down- I rarely condition the top of my hair because of this, doing so leaves me totally flat.  But for the most part, I’m always looking for a super hydrating conditioner, especially for the ends, and colored parts, of my hair.

Always down to try new products I saw the Keranique Scalp Stimulating Shampoo and Volumizing Conditioner in the iFabbo shop a few months ago, & knew I needed to test it out, the volumizing caught my eye.  Now, let me be honest, Keranique is a brand well known for their hair regrowth products.  I certainly don’t need to worry about that (which I’m very grateful for), but I do worry about what all of the coloring and heat damage does to my hair, so any product that stimulates new hair growth, and works to strengthen hair, is something I’m up for trying out.

I liked the consistency of both the shampoo and the conditioner.  The Keranique Scalp Stimulating Shampoo lathered well and I let it sit in for about 2 minutes, which is suggested on the bottle.  It had a nice mint scent, so my scalp did feel nice and refreshed once I washed it out.  The shampoo helps to strengthen hair as well as reduce buildup- which can potentially be a problem, and cause flakiness if not fully removed, if you’re using a lot of products daily.

The conditioner scent was the same as the shampoo, I really love the minty smell, especially when it is not overpowering.  The Keranique Volumizing Conditioner seals split ends and helps to prevent breakage all while volumizing at the same time.  I always air dry my hair, and I was pleased with how this air dried- I had no more frizz than I typically do (which is very little as long as I do not brush it), and my styling products took well.

It was fun to try out these products, as I would normally not purchase this brand regularly.  After two weeks of use my hair looks and feels great, and I enjoy the way my scalp feels after shampooing.  I can’t say I’ve noticed a ton of volume in my hair from the conditioner- but I do appreciate how soft and hydrated my hair feels, especially as the weather continues to change.

Check out Keranique products here!  You can also find these products on Ulta’s website, here!

Budget Beauty: Clear Scalp & Hair Intense Hydration Shampoo / Conditioner

As someone who colors her hair quite frequently, as in about once a month maintenance, I’m always focusing on the damage that’s being done to my strands.  Note I’m saying strands and not scalp…for years I honestly never thought twice about how the products I was using, both styling and color related, were effecting the health of my scalp- I never really cared.   It wasn’t until about a year ago that I really needed to change my thinking, especially with the change of seasons, particularly the transition from summer to fall.  My scalp was hurting…literally, I was experiencing intense dryness and psoriasis.  Not only was it uncomfortable I felt super self-conscious because it looked awful.

Clear Scalp & Hair
Intense HydrationShampoo and Conditioner gives my scalp, and hair, the lovin’ it needs to look and feel it’s best.  Since I’ve been using both the Intense Hydration shampoo and conditioner I haven’t experienced any dry scalp issues, and my hair has been noticeably softer.   I always need to take a fair amount of time to comb my hair after washing, it’s always been naturally kinky and somewhat knotty.  I was shocked the first time I used the Intense Hydration shampoo and conditioner, my hair had basically zero knots and the comb slid through perfectly.  No joke.

Both the Clear Scalp & Hair Intense Hydration Shampoo and Conditioner contain cactus extract, which helps hair stay healthy and nourished by flooding it with omega fatty acids.  This is exactly what my hair needs for the upcoming weather change to fall and winter.   This is the worst time of the year for me hair wise and I need to be able to rely on a super hydrating shampoo and conditioner, I’m so happy I’ve found that with Clean Scalp & Hair’s Intense Hydration line.

I had to share this picture, it’s originally from Snapchat, so sorry about that!  But, my hair has never looked this amazing without ANY product in it.  This is all the work of the Intense Hydration Shampoo & Conditioner.
Don’t let your hair, or scalp, health fluctuate this fall, get on board with Clear Scalp & Hair
Intense HydrationShampoo and Conditioner.  I’ve been so impressed with this line so far, and I’m looking forward picking up the Intense Hydration Treatment Mask during my next drugstore run!
You can find Clear Scalp & Hair
Intense HydrationShampoo and Conditioner your local drugstore, as well as Walmart or Target!

Protect Your Locks: Aveda Sun Care Protection Hair Veil

I have black hair and teal-ish/ green highlights.  My real hair color is light brown.
Bottom line is…I need to protect my hair color all of the time.  I can never take a break or else the sun’s UV rays will turn my color brassy, light, and awful looking & my texture will get super dry and ew.  Nobody needs that hair drama on a perfect summer day!

Aveda Sun Care Hair Veil

I’ve relied on Aveda’s Sun Care Protection Hair Veil all summer long while I’m out in the sun.  It’s UVA/UVB filters protect from the sun’s rays, while interesting ingredients cinnamon bark oil and wintergreen oil also help out with protection from sun damage.

I also love the smell of this product, it’s nice and citrusy!  I usually apply this quite a few times while I’m out in the sun, I never douse my hair but I make sure I spray an ample amount, I also have a lot of hair, so I need to make sure I’m covered from all angles.  It never weighs my hair down, or makes me look greasy and/or oily.  If anything it works as a nice detangle spray for after the beach/ pool.

  PS: You’ll need to reapply after swimming!

I feel like I really need the rest of Aveda’s Sun Care products.  The Sun Care After Sun Hair Masque sounds amazing after a day at the pool!

Modere Beauty Box: Antioxidant Hair Serum

A couple of months ago I was contacted by a subscription box service, Modere, to try out their beauty box.  After looking up Modere I was more than happy to explore what they had to offer!  Modere sent me five products, all of which I have been using on almost a daily basis.  This is the first post in a series of 3, so stay tuned!
Before I get into the first product, the Antioxidant Hair Serum, let me just say I loved the packaging of my Modere products.  The box the products came in was very sophisticated looking, and I think it’s awesome that in addition to the full size products, they also gave travel-sized versions as well!  Genius.
The winter can have such a harsh effect on your hair, especially if you have super long color-treated hair like mine.  Shampoos and conditioners can do wonders to help keep hair healthy and shiny but a great hair serum is seriously what you need to protect and strengthen during this time of year.

I’ve been having great success with Modere’s Antioxidant Hair Serum for a little over a month now.  I’ve been using it almost daily to tame any fly-aways/ frizz, and it’s great at detangling smoothing my hair after straightening.

The key ingredient in the Antioxidant Hair Serum is kuki oil, which seals the hair cuticle, preventing breakage and split ends.  Other ingredients include argan and jojoba seed oil, which are known to do wonders for hair.

Overall the Antioxidant Hair Serum aims to keep hair hydrated, nourished, shiny, and strong, and based off of my use of it I think it’s done a great job at all of those!  I worry with hair serums sometimes, they can be great and then all of a sudden your hair is a grease ball and so yucky- thankfully that has never happened once with this product!  The key to using a hair serum correctly is to use the tiniest bit, it’s perfect because it helps your product last longer, and you’re not ruining your hair by using too much.  Win-win.
Stay turned for my next post about Modere’s skincare products!!

Goody Ouchless Ribbon Elastics

{Disclaimer: Goody provided me with Ouchless Ribbon Elastics for the purpose of review.  All opinions are my own.}
I have a lot of hair.  Lots of it.  It’s everywhere.  Sometimes I feel I can’t control it.  Seriously…
This is where the perfect hair tie comes into play…I keep them everywhere… my room, bathroom, car, handbag, work bag, and my desk at work.  Literally I have them all around.
Goody is a brand everyone knows, and trusts, for high quality hair products at the perfect price point.  You can buy Goody products anywhere and they’re durable and trusty.  I’ve been using the Goody Quickstyle Paddle Brush for about two years now, I’ve taken good care of it and it’s lasted great!  Not to mention Goody is the only brand of plain black hair elastics I’ve ever used.
So, basically, Goody’s proved to me they are a great band and one I can return to time and time again.
Give me all of the colors.
Sometimes black hair ties can be boring and not look so pretty on our wrists when not wearing them in our hair.  Sometimes the typical hair ties break and stretch out easily, especially if you have redic think hair like mine.  Sometimes hair ties dent hair, actually most hair ties dent hair all of the time.  Goody Ouchless Ribbon Elastics aim to prevent all those issues and more.
When I opened my box from Goody I think I squealed in excitement, I mean seriously, look at ALL THE COLORS.  I immediately took out my boring black hair tie and opted for a pink Goody Ouchless Ribbon Elastic.

It took a little while for the Goody Ouchless Ribbon Elastic to stretch out to accommodate my hair, but once that was accomplished we were good to go.  All the colors and patterns of the elastics are just so fun and make me happy!  The holiday collection (check it out above, with the snowflakes on the packaging) colors are perfect, and the glitter adds a little extra glam.

Now I know pretty colors are fun and all, but the quality of holding hair back is probably most important quality of the Goody Ouchless Ribbon Elastics.  As I said, once I broke them in it was all good, but I do wish I hadn’t had to do all that.  When I first used the elastic it took a little while for me to get it out of my hair because it was so tight.  However, I will say I’ve tried using the same one for a few weeks, and it hasn’t overstretched at all, which makes me very happy.  These hair elastics are seriously durable.  The Goody Ouchless Elastics are stylish, they give me a great hold, and most importantly to me, they don’t dent my hair.
Pop into your local drugstore, grocery store, Target, or Walmart, and pick up a pack of Goody Ouchless Ribbon Elastics!

Travel Tryouts: Haircare Pt. I

Here goes my first round of haircare sample products I went through while in Europe, this first post is all about the shampoo and conditioner I used.
The first set of shampoo and conditioner I used up was from the Alterna’s Bamboo Smooth Anti-Frizz Collection {shampoo | conditioner}.  I got these samples from a Nordstrom event, so I figured the brand had to be pretty decent if Nordys is promoting them.
{Alterna Bamboo Smooth Anti-Frizz Shampoo & Conditioner, $22 each}
I have a pretty large frizz problem, so I’m willing to try any shampoo and/or conditioner that claims to fight frizz.  I’ll admit I did not have a lot of each product to use, I was only able to use each twice, but I enjoyed both products.  My shine was up to par, frizziness was not a concern, I had no tangles after washing, and both products passed my air-dry test.
I really enjoyed using the shampoo, the conditioner on the other hand was a so-so, it wasn’t OMG GREAT, but it wasn’t “bad” either.  I personally found the conditioner a bit too heavy for my taste, but the shampoo I really loved.
The second set of shampoo and conditioner I used is from the Arrojo Gentle collection.  My bestie Heather passed these along to me over Christmas.  The salon she works at, Salon Pure in Princeton NJ, uses Arrojo products and Heather said I would love the brand, naturally she was right.
{Arrojo Gentle Shampoo, $18 & Gentle Conditioner, $19}
The Gentle Shampoo & Gentle Conditioner are sulfate and sodium-chloride free, which is perfect for my psoriasis issues.  The shampoo was super light-weight and it’s cleaning job perfectly, so that’s always good!  I didn’t get much of a lather, but my hair felt clean and great after using it.  The conditioner was just as good, not too heavy, and when I combed out my hair it felt smooth, not tangly, and didn’t frizz after air drying….yay!!
I would definitely consider purchasing full size versions of these products, they’re safe for color treated hair, and with all the sun I get in the summer, I need to have those more gentle ingredients in my routine.
Tomorrow I’ll feature some more of the haircare products I used while I was in Europe, so stay tuned!

Taya Amazon White Clay Thickening Leave-In Mist & Thickening Styling Creme

I’ve been reviewing the entire Taya Amazon White Clay Thickening collection and this post features my absolute favorite product from this line, the Leave-In Mist.  If you haven’t seen my posts on the Shampoo & Conditioner and the Whipped Clay & Thickening Hair Spray, click on the links and check ’em out!
So far I’ve been loving the Amazon White Clay Thickening line, I’ve been using the products daily, and as I’ve mentioned in my other postings, the ingredients in these products have really helped with my psoriasis, it’s been amazing!
Anyway, on to today’s products…
First, the Thickening Leave-In Mist.  Amazing.  I mean it, I love it so much.  I use this mist after washing my hair, it gives me great volume and in the AM before work I’ll spritz some more in, it’s great.  I have a huge volume problem on the top at my roots, and the Leave-In Mist has been spectacular in revving up my roots and giving me a ton of body.
{Amazon White Clay Thickening Leave-In Mist, $22}
I’ve had no grease problem or heaviness issues with this product, it’s become a hair staple for me, and I’m so happy I have an entire bottle to use!!
The second product for today is the Thickening Styling Creme.  To be honest this is the last product I introduced into my regimen, I’m not into the hair styling creme scene, so I was hesitant on using it at first.
Right now this product is completely sold out on HSN, so I guess word is spreading on how great it is!  I’m not sure what to say about this product, I definitely like it, but I honestly do not have much to compare it to as I’ve never used a hair creme before this.
I’ve been using it to smooth out my ends, and I’ve noticed it’s tamed my ends since I need a trim badly, and given me overall volume when used alone.  I’ve been using very small amounts of the Styling Creme because, as I’ve said, I haven’t really experimented with cremes before- but I think it’s been doing it’s job quite well.
{Amazon White Clay Thickening Styling Creme, $22}
I want to thank Taya Beauty for providing me with the Amazon Clay Thickening line to review.  It was a great experience and I was able to learn about a brand I may not have found about elsewhere.  All Taya products are available through HSN or on their website, Taya Beauty!
