Happy Friday! I’m so happy it’s the weekend, especially a long weekend…even better. Today on D.C. Happenings I’m featuring a local pizza spot with a few locations in the DMV area, HomeSlyce Pizza Bar.
Last weekend, my boyfriend, Rob & I decided to try vegan pizza. Yes, vegan pizza. We’re both trying to make small changes to ultimately become 99% vegan. Which…for me…isn’t going so well. Case in point: pizza.
Anyway, I looked up the best places to find vegan pizza, and the K Street HomeSlyce location came right up. We ordered easily online, and drove over near GWU to pick it up. I went to college at GWU, and years ago this used to be a different pizza place…not very good I might add. So, I was super happy to see a great new pizza place in its spot!
The inside has a nice bar set up with both high tops and traditional tables. I love the little alcove above, if I was a GWU student I would def stop by here and get some work done on a Saturday afternoon. This is just a guess, but I’m assuming weekend traffic is a bit slow since nobody is at work, and without the 9 to 5 it’s a just college area. When I walked in on a Saturday afternoon it was empty, but I think that has to do more with the type of cliental they serve during the weekdays vs. the weekends- especially since they have great reviews!
Now, on to the pizza. It was both mine, and Rob’s, first time trying vegan cheese, so we were both super weary, but ready to give it a try. We ordered our pizza with jalapeños, green peppers, Kalamata olives, & garlic on it as well. If you’re wondering what kind of combo that is…I have no idea, I didn’t pick it.
Okay, full disclosure, we started eating it in the car, which is why I don’t have better pics of the actual pizza.
Nonetheless, here’s the lowdown on what we both thought of the vegan pizza…
While it’s certainly not like normal pizza, I didn’t think it was too bad at all. The toppings were fresh and delicious & the sauce was great, but my favorite part was the crust. I really haven’t had crust this good anywhere in D.C. As a Jersey girl it’s been impossible to find decent pizza down here, but this crust brought me back home and I loved it. The dough was delish, and the crust was just the right amount of crispy. Despite the vegan cheese being so foreign to me, every other aspect of the pizza was amazing.
Rob, on the other hand, had a difficult time accepting vegan cheese…specifically the consistency of it. So, he ended up taking it off his pieces entirely, but still raved about the sauce and the crust.
I cannot wait to try a slice or two of HomeSlyce with regular cheese…seeing that we loved every aspect of it besides the vegan cheese (only because it was our first time eating it), I just know we’ll be impressed with the real thing. If you’re used to the consistency and taste of vegan cheese, I think this is an excellent choice for a pizza place.
HomeSlyce has locations around the DMV area, you can check if one is close to you, here! They also have a new rewards program coming for 2018, and I love rewards programs, so I’ll be on the lookout for that!
Have a great & safe weekend!
